Fun Facts

If there is one thing I love more than photography, it would be talking about myself! Those that have read any of my long-winded journal entries from start to finish can attest to this (by the way, kudos if you are one of those people).
Also, please note that this is not out of vanity, I am not assuming that you are all clamoring over one another to find out more about me. I really enjoying getting to know the Deviant behind the art on a more personal level, I feel that it adds a whole new dimension to my enjoyment of your work.

That all being said, here is some information about me. My name is Sarah, I live in Northern Ontario (Canada). I was born and raised up here in the North, and if all goes as planned, I wont have to leave any time soon. Thankfully I was able to attend a local University, so I did not have to move far away for school. Right now I am in the process of completing my undergrad degree in English with a double minor in History and Philosophy; and yes, it is as much work as you think.
When I am not tirelessly toiling away in the library I enjoy getting outside. I feel lucky to be literally a stones throw away from miles of untouched wilderness. My parents raised us to have a deep respect and appreciation for nature, and that is something that has stuck with me through my childhood, my cynical teenage years, and right up to the present.

My penchant for photography began when I was very young. Some of you might not be old enough to remember the days BEFORE digital cameras, when people actually had to buy and then (*shudder*) develop film. I was introduced into the world of photography during these dark ages, and received my very first camera for my 8th birthday. I, unfortunately, do not remember what kind it was, but suffice to say, you would not give a fancy, expensive camera to an 8 year old. I held on to it for many years; it survived my less than responsible childhood, right up until I reached my mid-teens and finally received a new camera. Also of note, that 13 year old camera is still kicking around, my grandmother uses it when she goes to visit family and it works just fine. They just don't build things the way they used to back in my day.
Since then I have had several other cameras, one a Canon (still in the dark ages of film) and then 2 digital point-and-shoot Nikons. My love of photography really took off when I got my first digital camera. Being of the TV/videogame generation, I really have very little long-term memory left, so I would bring my camera with me everywhere so that I could basically document what I was doing and then go back and re-live the experience later (kinda like how killers take trophies so they can re-experience their crime, but mine is just in a non-killerish way). So, it turned out that 90% of what I was doing involved, either directly or indirectly, nature and being outside (in the woods, on the lake, etc) and through the documentation of my activities, my love of nature photography was born!

I have no formal training, someone once bought me a "Photography for Dummies" book, but I can honestly say that I never read it. Everything I know is through experience and trial and error. People sometimes ask me technical questions about my camera or equipment, and my answers sound incredibly lame (re: Yeah, well I pressed this thingy and it released the other thing, and then it... etc). For the record, I didn't even know what an F-stop was until, like, last year.

So that is a little rundown about my history and inspiration for photography. I like getting to know other artists here on DA, so feel free to send me a message or comment about yourself; also, if you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask. I look forward to hearing from you!

xox,
Sarah

Recent News

Hi everyone!

First of all I would like to say a huge thank you and welcome to everyone who has visited and watched my page in the last little while! I, along with several other highly talented photographers, have recently received a feature from the one and only :iconkkart: in a news article that can be found here. This amazing showcase has increased my traffic quite a bit, as I am sure it has for the other artists featured. So thank you John, it is very much appreciated, and it is a wonderful boon for new artists! I will be sure to check it out whenever you post it.
I also go quite the wonderful journal feature from :iconttl-photoworks: that can be found here. Again, many thanks! I really appreciate the support! There were some lovely comments posted underneath the feature, and be sure I read them all!
I am going to try and take the time to check out everyone's page, and again, thank you to everyone who has commented, faved, and looked at my artwork recently.

As far as updates with me go, I have been uploading a lot of pictures lately, so my apologies for flooding your inboxes! I recently graduated university and have been unable to find a full time job at the moment, needless to say I have had quiiiiiiiite a bit of free time on my hands. The silver lining of this cloud is that I have had plenty of time to get outside and take a lot of photos. The remainder of my spare time is spent applying After-Bite to the chickenpox-esqu blackfly and mosquito bites that pepper my skin following my every venture out of doors. I am scared to let the dog outside unsupervised because I worry that the little buggers are going to pick her up and carry her off at any moment.

Other than that, I am still truckin'. Things have been improving here, and we have gone at least a week without any snow! I know! I am shocked too! Needless to say, it was a little upsetting to be laying around outside working on my tan one week, and then waking up to find my backyard looking like this only 2 days later. The poor little animals were all freaked out. The hummingbirds especially did not know what to do. We got a record setting 3 centimeters of the white stuff on the 1st of June.
I had to put away my flip-flops and dig out the snow brush.

I have decided to enter some of my images in the La Cloche art show. It is my first experience with this type of thing, so I appreciate any and all feedback you guys
can give me.

I took it upon myself, with the consultation of my friends and family, to narrow my some 400 images down to the top 15. Of these 15 I need to select a top 3. This is where you come in. I am going to list the 15 images with a letter next to each one. I want you to rank them from best (being 1) to worst (being 15). Even if you just post your top 5 that would be a fantastic help to me!!!

What a stunning gallery! Came looking because ^kkart featured you, and I was not disappointed. Your self-portraits are every bit as compelling and beautiful as your landscapes, plants, animals, lightning... All in all, a gorgeous gallery. Thank you for sharing such incredible imagery.
